Strategic Planning: what is it and how do we do it?

The benefits of strategic planning at enterprise level are well documented. Similar research at a sector level is harder to find. This paper introduces the theory of enterprise level strategic planning. A number of definitions of strategy are discussed. Building on a review of the dominant schools of strategic thinking, the paper proceeds to discuss the influence of stakeholder theory and the planning time frame in the strategy generation process. The role, influence and/or needs of stakeholders in forming and implementing strategy will be considered. The application of the theory to a profession and sector will then be discussed. The objective of the paper is to provide an introduction to strategy with specific reference to the forestry sector.
